Last Friday in La-Place the Lutcher Bulldogs ended up four-yards short of completing a miraculous, come from behind victory over the St. Charles Catholic (SCC) Comets in what turned out to be a fantastic high school football game and one fans of both teams will not soon forget. Trailing 21-20, deep in their own territory, with no timeouts and literally seconds remaining on the play clock, Lutcher ran one last play and quarterback D’Wanye Winfield launched a pass toward the Bulldog sideline and senior receiver Tylin Johnson somehow got behind the Comet defenders, caught the ball, and seemed to be headed to the end zone to win the game in a dramatic/walk-off fashion. However, before Johnson could make it to the promised land Comet linebacker Michael Hotard hustled, sprinted and made the play of the game when he dove and tackled Johnson at the Comet four-yard line to win the game and send his teammates and the homestanding crowd into a frenzy.
The Lutcher Bulldog football team traveled to Thibodaux last Thursday for the season opener and the fans who made the trip sure got their money’s worth as the Bulldog offense put on a scoring clinic and beat the Class 5A Tigers 62-35. Lutcher’s offense, led by senior quarterback D’Wanye “Lunch” Winfield, was unstoppable as the ‘Dogs compiled more than 560-yards of total offense and scored on every possession except the last as they ran out the clock to seal the victory. When asked to say a few words on his team’s overall performance, head coach Dwain Jenkins says he was watching the play of the offensive line, a group that only returned one starter from a year ago, and he said for the offense to have success the line would have to answer the bell and play well.
Last Friday high school football fans sitting in Joe Keller Stadium in LaPlace witnessed a battle between two ‘Wildcat’ football teams and when the smoke cleared it was the East St. John Wildcats who walked off the battle field with a 28-20 victory over the St. James Wildcats.
St. James Wildcat star athlete/football player Khai Prean made it official last week when he announced his committment to play football for the LSU Tigers in 2023. Prean, who is one of the most sought after athletes/ football players in Louisiana, was highly recruited because of his versatility and his ability to play different positions on both offense, defense and special teams. Prean, who was also recruited by Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida St., made his announcement in the St. James High auditorium last week and in front of family, friends and teammates. The 6’, 190 lbs. Prean transferred from Ascension Catholic in Donaldsonville to perennial Class 3A powerhouse St. James and he indicated that his close relationships with the LSU coaching staff and his relationship with recent Tigers' commits, including Woodlawn quarterback Rickie Collins and wide receivers Shelton Sampson and Jalen Brown, influenced his decision to choose LSU.
