11-Year Old Speaks To Crowd At Lutcher Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth, also referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, honors the moment when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, received the longawaited news of their freedom on June 19, 1865. Despite President Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years earlier, it was only when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston that the proclamation was enforced, ensuring the liberation of those who were held in bondage.
