Across The River

Oh, how nice! The weather was perfect and crowds came to join in the fun from all parts of the world. Where else can you go on Christmas and see over a hundred pyramids of wood burning at the same time. The sights and the smells remain in one’s memory for a very long time. Thanks to the brave men and women who build these bonfires, have built them all their lives, to their ancestors before them who taught them how, and to those who don’t plan to stop. St. James Parish is likely one of the busiest places in the world on Christmas eve. I do miss all the special or feature bonfires that were so much a part of St. James Parish history. There were some architectural masterpieces on the levee in the past. The novelty structures bring the tourists and visitors to our area. We know that from seeing what happens in St. John Parish each year in Garyville. I know that the bonfires were big and tall, probably wider than they should have been, but so well made. I know that these structures are prohibited in the parish, but I wonder if we can have one novelty bonfire in each of the two towns. We may over advertise open houses along River Road. Last year one who owns a house along River Road told me he waited in line to use his own bathroom and had no idea who the person was in line ahead of him. Total strangers come in and help themselves to food without waiting for an invitation. Is it improper to be more selective about the people who come and go from your house? That can also be dangerous. Perhaps a nicely written sign saying “By Invitation Only” might be nonthreatening while still getting the message out. Thanks to the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office for restoring two-way traffic on River Road. This year I was able to drive visiting family members and friends from Grand Point to Gramercy this year without any problems. Thanks to all the law enforcement workers who sacrifice time with their own families to assure our safety on Christmas Eve.

Get High On Life

The prayer that God hears most often is “HELP!” Help me get through this, help me get well, help me with my finances, help me with human relations, etc. Most of our prayer life is asking for something.

The space between Christmas and New Years Day is always interesting for me. I usually conduct a personal debrief of the Christmas season and make a note of what worked and didn’t work. I add a few ideas for improvement and jot down what I’m inspired to change for next year. All these things are in a note on my phone and handwritten in my 2025 planner.
