Across the River by Pamela Folse
BUSHELS AND HAMPERS: I was talking to a group of young adults a few days ago and mentioned the word bushel. The youngsters had no idea what that meant. I asked whether they had ever heard of someone buying a bushel of crabs. Nope. They didn’t know about that either. That sent my mind racing to the time when my parents bought corn and peas by the bushel. When we got home with the car full of vegetables, we shelled the peas and shucked the corn to put them in the freezer for cooking later. My young friends also didn’t know about hampers of seafood or vegetables. They did know about laundry baskets but not hampers.
