HISTORICAL MARKER DEDICATION SATURDAY: Under bright sunny skies Saturday, June 14, 2025, in front of St. Philip Catholic Church, a small group of ancestors and friends gathered for the unveiling, dedication and blessing of the historical marker commemorating the Cyclone of 1924, which claimed the lives of some prominent residents of St. Philip. David Hubbell of Mobile, AL, an ancestor of the Vacherie Hubbells and organizer of the event welcomed everyone. Fr. Michael O’Rourke, pastor of St. Philip, gave the invocation and I was asked to give a short presentation on behalf of the community. Ancestors of those who perished in the storm unveiled the marker and Fr. O’Rourke and members of the families blessed it. Sheriff Claude Louis, also a local pastor, offered the benediction.

As strange as it may sound, I have often gone on a drive to think and ended up in front of my grandmother’s grave. I make a lot of decisions in the cemetery. Nowhere else are the priorities of life as clear to me. A visit in the cemetery is the quickest way I know to shift my perspective from ‘here and now’ to ‘there and forever.’
